Happy Friday! Can you believe we've already made it through the first full week of 2025? I hope the new year is treating you well so far.
January always feels like a fresh start, and it’s a great time to take a few simple steps to set yourself up for financial success this year. Here are some recommendations I always share with my clients:
- Pull Your Credit Reports:
Start the year off by pulling your credit reports from all three major bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion). You can get these for free at AnnualCreditReport.com.
- Dispute Small Errors:
If you spot anything inaccurate—like an old account showing the wrong balance or a late payment you’re sure you made—file a dispute. Clearing these up can boost your credit score over time.
- Adjust Your Withholding if Needed:
If you’ve had a salary change, a new job, or a major life event—such as getting married, divorced, having a child, or your dependents moving out—it’s a good idea to review your tax withholding. Adjusting your W-4 can help you avoid surprises at tax time or ensure you’re not overpaying throughout the year. You can use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator to make adjustments easily. Check it out here: IRS Tax Withholding Estimator.
- Set Up (or Refresh) Your Budget:
Whether you use an app or pen and paper, review last year’s spending trends and set realistic goals for saving, investing, or paying off debt.
- Opt Out of Unwanted Offers:
Tired of junk mail? You can opt out of pre-screened credit and insurance offers for free at OptOutPrescreen.com. Less clutter for your mailbox—and your mind!
- Check Your Retirement Accounts:
Review your contributions and ensure you’re taking full advantage of any tax-advantaged savings, like your 401(k), IRA, or HSA.
Taking a little time this month to get these tasks done can make a big difference for your financial health in 2025. And if you need guidance or have questions about any of these steps, don’t hesitate to reach out—I’m here to help.
Wishing you a fantastic weekend ahead!
